Male hair loss is known as Androgenic Alopecia, which is caused by your male hormones (androgens), on genetically predisposed hair follicles. For those who are prone to hair loss, within these genetically programmed hair follicles the male hormone (testosterone) is converted into the androgen (dihydrotestosterone – DHT) by an enzyme called 5-Alpha redustase. DHT inhibits the growth of new hair cells that leads to male hair loss in turn, an eventual baldness.
As hair follicles do not produce healthy hairs anymore, hair gets thinner, shorther and weaker. At the end of this ‘miniaturisation’ process, hair follicles only produce invisible and short hairs or hair die out altogether. You may easily notice this as before falling out, each new hair grows for much less time than the normal three years or around. Eventually, all that remains is a much smaller hair follicle and a thin stump of hair that does not grow out to the skin surface.
